In this video, hear directly from Dr Mark, a Gold Coast Dentist and owner of Dental as Anything in Helensvale.
Dr Mark shares his philosophy on preventative dental care and how patients can avoid serious gum and teeth issues.
Hi, my name’s Mark. I’m a Gold Coast Dentist and a business owner, and I’ve been delivering service for 30 years. I think people’s health and not looking after their teeth is an epidemic. A lot of people when they go to the dentist, they’ve had a bad experiences. They don’t want to go because of the fear that the dentist going to hurt them or the fear that it’s going to cost them a lot of money.
In the Western world, we have sugar galore in nearly everything you buy. Sugar is going affect your health and again affect your teeth. Your teeth will rot, decay will enter into the nerve, and you’ll get pain. The other thing is there’s some people who can eat their sugar and not affect their teeth. That’s a more serious problem. Those people don’t know anything’s wrong. They can actually lose the bone around their teeth. It can shrink and shrink and shrink with no pain. You have sugar giving you decay. You have gum disease giving you problems. The worst one of the lot is that bacteria in your mouth. Then it can affect not just your teeth and your health but your heart and your brain.
I will let my patients know with sincerity that if they start here, and they continue going through and looking after their teeth and getting things fixed, even if they have great fear at the beginning, after two years they will be a different person. They will not be the same. They will be different.
What do I do about my dental health? I floss all the time and brush three times a day and get my teeth cleaned regularly with the Hygienist. People are too busy, and they need to stop and reflect and look at the things that are important. The things that really are important at the end of the day are relationships. I think you should give people respect, give them options and choices, but give them control. They should be able to make those choices in a comfortable manner.
My customers understand their mouth exactly because I show them photos of their mouth. They can see it, and they understand it. That gives them power and understanding. People just say, “Wow, I have not had that explained to me ever like that before.” I’m not just looking at their teeth; I’m looking at the person. You need a voice. You need to be heard. You really need to be listened to. When I see a mouth, I look in the future and say, “What’s going to be happening? How can we prevent these things from happening?“
I see the practice growing to be more of a preventive focus with more hygienists and more dentists being able to do the same philosophy that I do and give the same care that I do. I like to work with people who actually are serious about their health, serious about their future, and serious about their gums and their teeth. I like changing people’s perception of life. I like making them live longer.
